If you are thinking about a small online business then you need to determine what exactly you are trying to accomplish online. That is, are you looking for a stand alone Internet business that will support you fully? Are you looking for an online presence in order to compliment your off line business? Or, do you just want a web site so that you can hopefully drive potential customers to your offline store or service business?
If you don’t make this determination early then you may very well find yourself getting lost and frustration because you will have no real direction. If one day you are concentrating all your energy on getting visitors to your web site in order to sell them products and then the next day it is all about creating leads for your regular business then you will never know what direction to go in. Trying to sell a product to someone online is vastly different than developing a website to capture leads for your carpet cleaning business, for example.
That being said, there are some overlapping aspects that are important with both types of web presences. You have to develop a way to get people to visit your site or it doesn’t matter what you are trying to do. You will fail. You must spend a lot of time working on visitor acquisition for both product sales and lead generation but the way you go about it may be quite a bit different.
For example, if you are trying to get customers for your carpet cleaning business then you will want to develop a presence on other websites that are local to your community. Try to develop a relationship with other small business owners so you can help each other. One great idea is to guest post on other people’s websites. Often times, people will tend to visit some sites regularly so when you determine which web sites are popular in your area then you can approach the web master for a trade. You write a good, informative post about carpet care and in return the owner links back to your site. It is a win win for everyone.
If, on the other hand, you are trying to sell carpet cleaning products then you want to be able to find clients all over the world. This sort of endeavor usually works very well with developing a high ranking in the search engine results pages. Thus when someone searches for a certain type of carpet cleaning product, matter where they are in the world, your website will come up at the top of the list.
Before you jump into spending time and money on an Online small business, be sure you know what it is you are trying to accomplish. This will help you develop a plan of action that will be both productive and efficient.
