Starting Your Own Online Business – Part 2

In the last installment of starting your own online business we started to talk about the most important aspect of making money on the web. If you want to start an Internet business, and more importantly, you want it to be successful, then you will have to get good at this one aspect. Of course there are many elements that go into starting an online business but the most important is getting visitors. If you don’t have people coming to your site then you will have no chance of converting them into customers. And if they are not customers then they are not going to buy anything and you will not make any money.
Historically there has been two schools of thought as to what is most important to have a successful Internet business. It is either spend your time on content or spend your time on getting traffic. From my experience, I think you need to spend about 90% of your time learning and implementing ways to get more eyeballs to see your web pages. The remaining 10% of the time you can spend on making your website look nice and on either choosing or developing products. But neither of this orders of business have any relevance at all if you are getting traffic to see what you have to offer.
The old adage, “Build it and they will come.” Is just not very accurate. If you put up a website with some information along with some products to buy then you can be assured not many people are going to stop by. Think about it. How would they possibly even know your site existed in order to visit it in the first place? They wouldn’t. Thus it is imperative that you find ways to get as many people as possible to actually see what you have.
One way to do this is with article marketing. The theory behind this is really quite simple. You should have a topic that your website is based around. In the last installment of the series Starting Your Own Online Business we used the example of dog collars. What you want to do is get people to recognize that you have the best dog collars so that they will want to visit your site. You can do this by becoming an expert. The way you do this is to publish lots of articles for article directories and do lots of guest posts on pet based websites teaching the readers about all aspects of dog collars. Then, at the bottom of the articles or in the body of the guest post, you can add a link back to your site. You can say something like, “If you found this article helpful then visit us at The Dog Collar Emporium,” (or what ever your site is called). This title is then linked back to your site so when they click on it they can visit you and see what you have to offer.
There have been a lot of people who have made a killing by using only article marketing techniques to drive boat loads of people to their sites. But more important, these links also have another function that we will talk about in the next installment.
