First off, the Internet is not some magical place that just makes people millionaires because they put up a website. The biggest problem with starting your own Internet business is getting people to come to your site. If you don’t have any visitors then you have no one to turn into customers so it is important that you get this part right. You really have two options when it comes to getting people to visit your site. They both take skill to pull off.
The first way is to buy the traffic. This can be accomplished by paying for advertisements on other sites and hoping that people will see your advertisement and then click on it to see what you have. This used to be effective but it is becoming much less so. Now the average person has gotten to where they just tune out any ads that come up because they are plastered all over. One recent online advertising advancement has been the realization that people are drawn to movement. That is why you are seeing so many ads with things moving. Also, this seems to work best on the right side of the screen so most of these ads are over there. But as you can see, making display ads work takes a lot of knowledge.
You can also buy traffic by joining a Pay Per Click program like Google Adwords. With this model, you place small advertisements which look like classifieds on Google search pages and also on other people’s websites. When someone searches for a term they will see your ad which is targeted to that keyword. Maybe they will click on your add and come to your site. But, each time someone clicks you have to pay Google or whoever owns the PPC you are working with.
The other way that you can drive a lot of traffic to your site is with free methods. These include search engine marketing and article marketing. The idea is to either get your website listed in the search results for the search engines or to get publish articles on other websites that a person can read and then you provide a link to your site and they hopefully click on it. For my money, this is the best method for getting people to your site and then you can sell them whatever you want.
