It’s getting harder and harder for people to make ends meet these days.  I am sure this is not something that I need to tell you.  If you are like me, the bills going out just keep getting bigger and bigger while the wages have been stagnant for over five years.  Or maybe it is worse, maybe you have lost your job altogether.  Either way, there is no reason to give up hope.  This is still the “Land of Opportunity” and you can learn how to earn extra money if you have the right mind set.

If you are serious about learning how to earn money then you need to start by looking at what you spend your time doing now.  Do you watch TV every night?  How much do you get paid to do that?  Nothing, right?  Why not turn that time suck off and you will instantly find several hours a week that you can devote to making extra money to pay off your bills or buy the things you need or want.

Now that you have some time to use for your adventure, start by making a list of all the things you can do.  I mean everything.  If you have worked in a job outside the home you have picked up a lot of skills that aren’t necessarily in your job title.  List them.  You also probably have had hobbies over the years.  List these also.  Anything you can think of that you know how to do should be written out on paper.  I would suggest starting this list and them working on it for a few days.  Every time something comes to you, write it down before you forget it.

I used this method when I was in college and needed to make some extra money.  Actually it wasn’t extra because I really wanted to eat and I didn’t have any way to earn extra money for food.  So I started thinking about all the things I knew how to do.  I worked in a grocery store during my High School years but I didn’t want something with a set schedule because of classes.  Then I remembered that I always helped my grandmother work in her yard.  I weeded, planted flowers, and mowed.  Maybe I could turn this into an extra stream of money I thought.  So now, with an idea in hand, I thought about where I could get customers.  Who needs yard work done?  Well my grandmother had needed help so maybe other senior citizens would also I thought.  I went to two senior centers and asked if I could post flyers.  It was important that I went in person, I think, because the people who ran the center were able to see that I was an upstanding young man and thus they let me put up my ad.  Within a week I had several accounts.  And one of them was a real bonanza.  The lady who called actually had several rental units and I ended up being a handyman for her the entire time I was in College.  This really helped pay the bills.

What this story should tell you is two things.  First, you probably already have within you the skills to start a business that can either be part time to earn easy money or that can work into something bigger.  Maybe you like people.  How about driving seniors to appointments if you have a car or doing odd jobs around their homes.  Many of our older citizens still want to live in their own homes but they need a little help.  You could do that for several people and often times make a few hundred dollars a month.  Or maybe you like kids.  Why not baby sit?  As more teenagers turn away from doing these types of activities it opens up ways for making extra money for adults.  The point is there are all kinds of things that people need done for them and they are willing to pay you to do them.

The second thing this story should tell you is once you have a couple of ideas you are going to have to market yourself to potential customers.  This just means finding a way to get your service out in front of people who may want it and then convincing them that you can offer them good value for their dollar.
