If you try to change any of these steps, or skip one, you are on shaky ground. You more than likely will fail.
The biggest mistake most new online business owners make is to start with the product. They get an idea for a product and then lock themselves away for months or years creating a book or some other widget. When they finally emerge and offer their product to the marketplace there are no sales. At this point they create a marketing campaign to try to sell their new widget. They buy advertising or write articles, anything to get the word out. Our new business owner feels that if the market only knew about this great new product they would beat a path to his or her door.
Still no sales.
Finally our business owner gets to the market research step. And, horror of horrrors, he or she finds out there is no market for this product. There really is nobody who wants to buy it for any price.
This is insane. Our potential business owner spent months or years of her life and has nothing to show for it other than a product nobody wants.
The first step in any business has to be the market research. You have to determine if there is a market before you develop a product. Ninety five percent of the mistakes in creating an online business are made at the martket research stage. People hope they have a product others want and they waste hundreds and thousands of dollars finding out they are wrong. It does not have to be this way. You can uncover great markets with people hungry for products and then when you give those people what they want they will give you money. Lots and lots of money.
There is a saying in marketing attributed to Gary Halbert a copywriter. “If you want to open a restaraunt, the most important thing to have is a hungry crowd.”
The second part of the success equation is traffic. You must get people to visit your site. It doesn’t matter if you have the best product in the world. A product that answers the needs of millions of people. If they don’t know about it they can not buy it from you.
There are two main ways to drive traffic to your site. You can pay for it or you can get it for free. Both of these have a place but for me free is always better. We will show you how to get ranked in the search engines and then when someone searches for the product you are selling your website will be the one they see in the search listing. They then click on your address and you have a chance to make them a customer.
This brings us to the third part. You must turn the traffic from step two into customers who buy something from you. You are interested in a business. A business makes money. That is the point of having a business. If you want to have a charity or give things away for free that is fine but it is not a business. We are teaching you how business can be a service. People want and need things. Your job is to find out what they need and sell it to them. You are giving them what they need and they are giving you what you need, money.
We will start with selling products that already exist because there is less risk that way. Once you determine that your customers will buy something (really anything that satisfies their need), then you can finally get to the last step which is product creation.
Now when you create your product you know you will have customers. you can create a product that absolutely, positively gives them what they want. By testing the woters first, your customers will tell you exactly what they want before you risk any money or time on creating a product that has no buyers.
